Whitney Houston began singing in her church choir, before becoming a backing singer for artists like Chaka Khan. Her first single was a duet with Teddy Pendergrass, released in 1984, but it wasn't until her second solo single, You Give Good Love that the public really began to take notice. 

Follow up Saving All My Love For You won Whitney her first Grammy Award, and The Greatest Love of All cemented her self titled debut album at the top of the charts. The album went on to sell over 13 million copies, the best-selling debut ever by a female solo artist.

Follow-up Whitney debuted at the top of the charts, backed by singles I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Where Do Broken Hearts Go? While third album I'm Your Baby Tonight fared less well, in 1992 her debut feature film The Bodyguard was released, and the Dolly Parton cover I Will Always Love You became a worldwide smash hit and was for a time the biggest selling single in history.
